Cualquier persona que ame a The Gossip estaba esperando ansiosamente el cuarto álbum de la banda.

El tercer disco de la banda, Standing In The Way Of Control, estuvo sonando bastante el año pasado y aunque el disco salió en el 2006, la canción del mismo nombre, ha estado machacando nuestros oídos en las pistas de baile gracias a los remixes creados por gente de la talla de Soulwax y Le Tigre, entre otros. Todos esperaban que el cuarto álbum de la banda fuera más explosivo y desafiante, tal como la actitud de su famosa vocalista, Beth Ditto.

Beth Ditto es un caso aparte en la industria de la música; se pronuncia como lesbiana, apoya el bisexualismo y defiende los derechos de los gays, tiene sobrepeso, posa desnuda para alguna campaña publicitaria o para la portada de una revista, confronta al público y casi siempre se desviste en sus conciertos. Ella aprovecha sus shows como un excelente escaparate mediático y gracias a su gran personalidad se mostró como diseñadora de una línea de ropa para los almacenes ingleses Evans, especializados en tallas grandes.

La producción de este cuarto disco estuvo a cargo del famoso Rick Rubin y no podía ser mejor para aumentar las expectativas del lanzamiento del mismo. En junio del 2009, salió a la venta su cuarto álbum de estudio llamado Music For Man. Su música es igual de ambigua que la portada del disco, en la que se muestra a la baterista Hannah Blilie, de apariencia bastante andrógina con un peinado a la Morrissey. De este álbum se desprende el pegajoso sencillo "Heavy Cross", con una base fuerte de bajo, unos riffs contagiosos y gritos por parte de Ditto, que canta “We can play it safe, or play it cool”, y seamos honestos, con esta banda nunca pensamos en jugar limpio, sino jugar “cool”, digamos que con este sencillo cumplen a la perfección con las expectativas de sus fans.

En el segundo sencillo, "Love Long Distance", la batería lleva el ritmo, se aprecia un piano como elemento principal, se escuchan los sintetizadores y la forma de cantar de Ditto me recuerda alguna canción setentera de la época disco, creando una rola completamente hecha para las pistas de baile, creo que esperaremos unos cuantos remixes de esta canción, inundando las fiestas este año.

En la canción "Vertical Rhythm", escuchamos un bajeo y un semi- rapeo cadencioso de Ditto, diciéndonos: “What goes around comes back around, You better make the right move”, casi advirtiéndonos de las desventajas de jugar con el karma y nos avisa que se aproxima un riff de guitarra, que más que nada hace que tengas ganas de brincar.

Puede que Music For Man se escuche más limpio, pero aún tiene todos los elementos musicales para convertirse en uno de los mejores discos del año, este conserva ese rasgo visceral, crudo, tal como debe ser un buen disco de rock. Music For Man, es un disco muy bueno, me atrevería a decir que será de los mejores discos del año, y la banda sencillamente nos deja con hambre de más.

A simple vista parecería que The Gossip bajó el ritmo un poco, dejando de lado esas raíces rockeras que se dejaron ver en el disco Standing In The Way Of Control, pero creo que se ve un The Gossip más evolucionado, se ve una maduración, inclusive se aprecia en las letras, lo que sí es evidente, es que Ditto sigue jugando con esa actitud y bisexualidad, que marcó una pauta a seguir en la industria musical e hizo que la gordura y la sexualidad no fueran un impedimento, sino fueran parte del mainstream del rock, no por algo su frase favorita es: “Perfection is not real”.

Anyone who loves The Gossip was anxiously waiting for the release of their fourth album.

Their third album, Standing in The Way of Control was played a lot last year and, although the album was released in 06, the self-titled tune has been grinding our ears on the dance floor thanks to remixes by Soulwax and Le Tigre, among others. Everyone was waiting for the fourth album to be more explosive and defiant, just like their famous singer, Beth Ditto.

Beth Ditto is a different story in the music industry; she claims to be lesbian, is for bisexualism and fights for gay people's rights, is over weight, poses nude for an interest group's campaign or a magazine's cover page, confronts the public and most of the time she undresses at her concerts. She makes of her shows an excellent way to expose to the media and thanks to her great personality, she showed herself as a fashion designer with a collection for High Street store Evans (England), specialized in Big and Tall.

Rick Rubin was in charge of the production of this fourth album, this has lead to higher expectations of the album's release. Their fourth studio album Music For Man, was released in June of 09'. Their music is as ambiguous as the cover art that shows drummer Hannah Blilie in a very androgynous look and a la morrisey hair style. From this album was released their first single "Heavy Cross" with a solid bass structure, catchy riffs and Ditto's screams singing, "we can play it safe, or play it cool", but let's be honest, with this band we never expect to play it safe, but rather play it cool. Lets say that with this single they meet the expectations of their fans.

In the second single "Love Long Distance", the drums set the rhythm, the piano is in charge of the melody and synthesizers can be heard in the background. Ditto's singing style reminds me of a 70's disco groove. This tune is designed for the dance floor, I think we expect a few mixes of this song decorating this year's parties.

In "Vertical Rhythm" we can hear a bass line and, in a cadence-like rap, Ditto telling us: "What goes around comes back around, you better make the right move", almost warning us of the disadvantages of playing with karma. At the same time, all of the above give you a clue that a guitar riff is coming and, more than anything else It makes you wanna jump.

Although Music for Man is quite "clean" in sound, it still has the elements to become one of the best albums of the year; visceral features, raw, just like a good rock album should be. Overall, a very good album, I dare to say that it would be one of the best this year, this group simply leaves me wanting more.

At first glance it would seem that The Gossip slowed down a bit, that they put to the side the rocker roots that were heard in the album Standing In The Way Of Control, but I think that the group has evolved to a more mature one, fact that can be noticed in their lyrics. What is obvious is that Ditto keeps playing with the attitude and sexuality that set the guidelines in the music industry and made fatness and sexuality be part of the mainstream of rock. It is not a coincidence that her favorite quote is "perfection is not real".
